DSC6182smThe completion of the first stage of examinations carried out under the "Precious Health" Program took place on 19th September in Warsaw. The Mobile Hearing Center and the Mobile Medical Center have parked at the buildings of Polish Television and Polish Radio. Inhabitants could seek advice of doctors: otolaryngologists, ophthalmologists, cardiologists, periodontists and dermatologists. In total, over a thousand tests and consultations were given and conducted. Millions of radio listeners and television viewers following the "live" footage from the medical camp were reminded that it was worth taking care of their health.

In the television studio Prof. Henryk Skarżyński and Prof. Renata Górska - national consultant in the field of periodontics actively supporting this Program, and in the radio studio - Prof. Henryk Skarżyński and Dr. Anna Olszewska from the Institute of Physiology and Pathology of Hearing, encouraged the audience to take advantage of free medical consultations. Just after the first live spots, people began to queue to see the experts. The longest line was for the hearing tests. Many patients were also delighted to hear that the Institute of Physiology and Pathology of Hearing has the Tinnitus Treatment Department, which offers patients the latest therapies for this ailment, psychological support, constant access to information about tinnitus, as well as, in cooperation with the Tinnitus Club, contact with other patients having a similar problem.

Warsaw patients also complained about the noise that predominates in the capital city. - I live on a busy street. It is so loud that I cannot open the window, because my ears would not withstand so many decibels - one of the patients said, asking if noise may be the cause of hearing attenuation.

To get to the ophthalmologist meant waiting in a queue of some twenty or thirty people. Two specialists from the CMKP Ophthalmology Clinic were giving consultations: Dr. Anna Plichta and Dr. Aleksandra Opala. Patients, in their majority people over 60, most often asked the simplest question - how to take care of your eyes to prevent eye diseases in the future. The vast majority (about 70 percent) complained about the ailments typical of the so-called dry eye syndrome, which - as ophthalmologists recommend - can be relieved by using moisturizing drops several times a day. In pharmacies there is a large selection of such preparations. As emphasized by Dr. Anna Plichta, we should use eye drops without preservatives. Many patients use familiar eyebright preparations, chamomile compresses, etc. to relieve stinging or burning eyes. Nowadays experts advise against them since they may cause allergies.

The inhabitants of Warsaw were also eager to seek the cardiologic advice of: Dr. Diana Paskudzka and Dr. Michał Kowara from the Department of Cardiology of the Independent Public Central Clinical Hospital in Warsaw. Patients visited cardiologists not to obtain diagnosis, but first of all to resolve doubts regarding the already prescribed treatment ("Do I need any medication for slight overpressure", "Are there replacements of the drug prescribed by the cardiologist", "Does the redness of the eye indicate hypertension", "How to control your health a few years after a heart attack"). – It is hard to have such conversations during consultations in the doctor’s office because of time pressure - Dr. Kowara summed up briefly.

Just like earlier - in other cities and towns, also periodontologists were consulted. – Not caries, but periodontitis is the most common cause of tooth loss - emphasized Dr. Andrzej Miskiewicz, a dentist from the Mucous Membrane and Periodontal Diseases Department of the Medical University of Warsaw. >em>- The most important point of prophylaxis is the oral hygiene - he added, demonstrating on a special model how to brush your teeth properly.

The Ministry of Health also had its stands in the medical camp in the TV yard. Patients could talk with a MH specialist about the 75+ drug program, take the blood pressure and meet paramedics of the ambulance emergency team, who took blood pressure and saturation measurements, and also drew blood to check the glucose level. A dietitian from the National Center for Nutritional Education was also waiting for patients. One could became a volunteer blood donor in the blood donor bus of the National Blood Center.

Let’s remember that the "Precious Health" program was created on the initiative of Prof. Henryk Skarżyński, and is implemented by the World Hearing Center of the Institute of Physiology and Pathology of Hearing, Institute of Sensory Organs and the Committee of Clinical Sciences of the Polish Academy of Sciences.
