Henryk Skarżyński

Professor Henryk Skarzynski is an otosurgeon, expert in otorhinolaryngology, audiology and phoniatrics. Since 2011 he has been a national consultant in otorhinolaryngology. Previously he had been a national and regional consultant in audiology and phoniatrics.

He is the first surgeon in Poland to perform cochlear implantation (1992), brainstem implantation (1998) and middle ear implantation (2003). He is the author of the program of the partial deafness treatment of patients with cochlear implants (PDT), that he implemented for the first time in 2002 in an adult and in 2004 in a child. It is considered a Polish specialty and is known as "Skarzynski's method" and has been implemented in numerous centers in the world. For the purpose of PDT professor Skarzynski developed a new type of safe electrode used in cochlear implants of a new generation. In 2008 in Kajetany he was in a team that performed the first in the world bilateral brainstem implantation. Professor Skarzynski has also experience in cochlear implantation in babies under 1 y.o.

In the last two decades he introduced in Poland middle ear implants and several dozens of new clinical procedures. Prof. Skarzynski's activity contributed to the dynamic development of hearing implantation, otosurgery and audiology in Poland and in the world. He was an initiator and organizer of the second in Europe Center for Deaf and Hearing Impaired People "Cochlear Center" (1993), and then of the Institute of Physiology and Pathology of Hearing (1996), the International Center of Hearing and Speech (2003) and the World Hearing Center (2012).

The work of professor H. Skarzynski and the team of the Institute of Physiology and Pathology of Hearing during the last 20 years has concerned pioneering treatment in epidemiology and prophylaxis of hearing disorders. They together developed and implemented new screening programs in children of different ages, epidemiological test programs and modern programs of therapy and rehabilitation of hearing, voice and speech disorders.

Prof. Skarzynski is the author and co-author of over 2500 research studies published in Poland and abroad, as well as over 1800 works presented at national and international conferences. He makes a lot of educational work teaching students and physicians in Poland and abroad. He was granted an honorary professor of Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, USA (1998). He was conferred twice an honorary title of doctor honoris causa by Maria Grzegorzewska Academy of Special Education in 2011 and by the University of Warsaw in 2012.

He is the member of many prestigious national and international scientific associations He is the President of the Clinical Science Committee at the Polish Academy of Sciences, honorary member of the Slovak Association of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, first Polish member of the American Otological Society, member of CORLAS, POLITZER, ISA, IAO, EAONO, EFAS and many more. He has been awarded several state honors, e.g. the awards of the Prime Minister, Minister of Health, Minister of Science and Minister of Foreign Affairs, as well as numerous scientific awards and other prestigious honours in Poland and abroad. He has been decorated by the Polish president with the Knight's Cross, Officer's Cross and Commander's Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta and with many foreign awards e.g. of the Belgian king, president of Ukraine and Georgia. He is the 46th honorary citizen of Warsaw. The Man of Freedom awarded on the occasion of the 25th Anniversary of Polish Freedom Day.

During the Polish Presidency of the EU professor H. Skarzynski initiated and coordinated works under the project titled "Equal opportunities for children with communication disorders in European countries" which was a part of the health priority.

His efforts brought about the "European Consensus Statement on Hearing, Vision and Speech Screening in Pre-school and School Age Children" – signed on June 22, 2011 by European experts in audiology, otolaryngology, phoniatrics, ophthalmology, and speech language pathology, both documents signed in Warsaw, on. These efforts resulted in the "EU Council Conclusions on early detection and treatment of communication disorders in children, including the use of e-Health tools and innovative solutions" endorsed on December 2, 2011.

His greatest research, clinical and educational achievement is preparation of the concept and construction and opening of the World Hearing Center in May 2012.
